  • Stephen Bonamo:   Musical Ties - I don’t know about you, but I have specific memories of my times in Babylon High and life in Babylon Village in general. I guess we all do. Maybe some of mine bring back some memories for you too or maybe you have completely different ones. We must have different ones because I remember debates with others to who was the best group, The Beatles vs. Led Zeppelin and about 100 other contests. For me, going in some chronological order I have to start with the Bee Gees. I remember listening to songs like, “To Love Somebody” and “Massachusetts” and “I Started a Joke” during light warm breezy summers in the Village especially on trips to the Babylon Village pool….or when school started walking down to the bus stop where I saw one of my first female friends Kathy Moran. Later on, walking all the way to school in High School. For some reason, I relate Bee Gees music with summertime. I remember the song, “Penny Lane” by the Beatles coming out of Recreation when I’d open the outside gym door after showering and feeling the cold winter air first hitting my face on my walk home. Remember recreation? Of course, there was an incident where one time I skipped my catholic communion studies to go there and dad found out and paid me a little visit at the gym. When he got there I don’t know what hit me but afterwards, after awakening, some fellow recreation classmates told me my dad slapped me in the back of the head in slight disappointment of my entertainment destination choice. In the fall and winter of 1969 I remember the song, “Something” by the Beatles and getting into my brother John’s car to get a ride to school with snow all over the place and billows of smoke coming from the exhaust. About at that time, I remember sitting in my geometry class in my usual seat by the door and Connie Belt walking down the hall with a friend talking about how she liked my new “shag” haircut. The door was open at the time and Connie had no idea that at the exact moment she made that comment to her friend she was passing by the very class I was in with the door wide open. I remember the teacher smiling at me and the whole class heard it too. I had a 10 second moment of glory. Thanks Connie. And of course, the summer before we had Woodstock and all of that albums songs. I remember Santana in particular. Another group I relate to winter time in Babylon Village was Crosby Stills and Nash, especially their first album of which I still think today was their best one. Come on.. you can’t beat songs like Guinevere, Wooden Ships, Woman of the Island, 49 Bye Bye’s, Helplessly Hoping, etc…. The West Islip girls played a big part here. Especially Chrissy for me but good friends like Sue and Debbie too. I really liked them. On the West Babylon side when we did that gig with Karen and Leslie and Karen I for some reason remember music from Grand Funk Railroad - -- Captain of the Ship or something like that – and I remember the Autumn season. Cold walks to West Babylon wearing jackets and heavy sweaters. I relate our Babylon Saturday afternoon football games to this time period too for whatever reasons. Later on I remember songs like, “Fire and Rain” and “Let it Be” with 1970 and the soon breakup of the Beatles and not long afterwards my departure from my beloved Village in August 1971. A lot of memories under the bridge by then. A lot. My dad had worked a lot of years and was tired. To boot, he didn’t like the supervisor he worked for and to boot had visited New Smyrna Beach on vacations and saw the mild winters and good property values in Florida. All that mixed together sealed my doom in staying in the Village. He should have waited until I graduated at least but come what may. I can’t blame a man that had financially provided for me all my life. He deserved some happiness too. But, nonetheless, I hated to leave. After I was in Florida, I for some reason remember coming up north for visits with my brother Frank in his orange VW Bug just us two - usually but not always in the winter time around Christmas listening to great songs from Carol King (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and So Far Away), early Elton John(My Song and others), James Taylor (You’ve Got a Friend and others)… just us two me and my brother riding up I-95 along the snow swept highway through South and North Carolina stopping overnight to rest and waking up and eating at a Waffle House for breakfast before being on the road again knowing that after the 2nd days traveling was over we’d be back in our home town of Babylon Village. I may have moved but Babylon was always in my heart. Not only that but at that time I still had the close friendships I used to have before I left. When I arrived I would find Marty and the guys still playing ping pong in his garage figuring out where the party was that they’d go to. Or I’d find the warm welcome of Mrs. Morgan and eating with the family. I still remember the smell of that house. A lot has changed since then but these musical ties and all the warmth those days brought to me that would last a lifetime is still with me even if only in memory. I miss those days.
